| Preface
Elephants are among the tallest and heaviest land mammels on earth. There are two main species of the elephant: The African and the Indian elephant.
The African elephant is clearly taller than its Indian cousin and always carries tusks. With the Indian elephant, only the bull carries tusks.
In the wild komen elephants still occur from the Sahara desert in Africa south to South-Africa and in sout east Asia. On many places however, the populations are small. Fortunately the elephant is no longer among the most endangered species.
Nonetheless the elephant is at serious risk by the activities of poachers. The ivory tusks of the elephant make a fortune on the black market. Fortunately, at many places now - with the help of WWF - the battle with the poachers has seriously begun. Unfortunately the elephant cannot yet live its life at rest at all places.
Elephants are extremely strong and are know to be able to tear down big trees without any problem.
